SUBPOENA COLADA opens with Daniel Tate, an attorney with White Hunter, a British law firm specializing in entertainment cases, defending Brian Fey, former bassist and vocalist with The Black Dahlias, an established popular rock group. Brian, dropped a few months previously, erroneously received a £400,000 cheque and refused to return it. The group was suing him for the money. While Daniel recognizes his client is going to lose, Brian wants to fight the battle. That’s not the only battle Daniel and Brian fight. Brian has major issues with anger management, Daniel’s long-time girlfriend has moved out and he wants to restore their relationship, and both of Daniel and Brian abuse alcohol and drugs. (He details the feelings the character gets from both substances.) In addition, White Hunter is going to elevate one of four associates to partner. Daniel wants the job and interoffice politicking plays a large role. And one of the band members is found hanging in his apartment. Brian is a suspect.I was going to quit reading after the first twenty five, then the first fifty pages. I decided to read the reviews and several of them said that the last part of the book was much better. I persisted and do agree with them. There were a couple interesting twists near the end.
Mark Dawson presents a very readable story, well-written and with some characters I actually cared about. He writes about the problems working with entertainers and how some groups are formed noting “What was subversive in the eighties is conventional today.” He describes one character as “a giantess who looks like Grace Jones in negative.” Later on he describes the snow: “...haze in the air, fat flakes I watched gathering in the crooks of buildings and then overflowing, spilling out onto pavements and roofs until everywhere was white.” Other examples I like, “The salt leaves a tide-mark of scurf on the uppers of my shoes” and, describing the weekly staff meeting: “We call this blamestorming.” and “Pain is all I have left of my relationship. I don’t want to share it with anyone else.”
However, I found much of the book unrealistic. The firm expects its lawyers to produce ten billable hours daily. One of the partners demands that Daniel research and write summaries for additional cases (due within 48 hours) while he is in court for his current case. With all of his drinking and drug use, I don’t understand how he can accomplish anything.

With all the drugs, drinking, the main character acting like a drunk, stoned 2 year old, gave up on the book. what a waste of time and writing
What is with the 4 and 5 star ratings? Not really sure this book deserves my time for a review or even one star. I just stopped reading this book and deleted it from my kindle after 18%. If it gets really, really good after this point I would be shocked to hear it. Rampant unnecessary drug use details, lazy attorneys, creepy unlikable characters (especially main character) and this author's inability to stay focused on any one subject for more than 2 seconds without constantly jumping around makes this book unreadable and a British bore!
This is an absolute DOG of a book. I'm more than 30% through it, spent over five hours getting this far and have yet to find a single redeeming feature. I kept thinking it was me, but after re-reading the one-star reviews I felt much better about the whole thing. If you have this beast downloaded on your and start to smell something funny, you now know the source.
I have read a lot of novels written for entertainment, not necessarily enlightenment. This is among the best and it is noticeably original. Perhaps an English writer speaking to an American reader explains some of this, but I found it refreshingly original and interesting. My only reservation is that the problems and disasters of the main character that we were all hoping to be resolved in his favor were depressingly piled on to the point of excess. Took a long time to get to the part we wanted to get to. I loved the book. I have been greatly entertained by all of the several books by this author that I have read.
Imagine Bridget Jones's Diary where the main character is a youngish male lawyer with serious substance abuse issues, abandoned by his girlfriend, and hanging on to a delusion that he will make partner in his law firm, all while hanging out with a has-been rock star named "Fey." I agree with others that the so-called surprise plot twist was telegraphed way in advance (e.g. the name "Fey"). I did like the characterizations of Fey and the conniving rival lawyer, as well as some of the TV actors. Also, as a narrative about someone moving toward recovery I would almost recommend it, were it not for the amorality, and the implausibility of the lawyer's behavior in the end. The right emotions were there, but it was as if the author wrote himself into a corner and hey, the way out was theft by deception. Worst of all is that it is marketed as being terribly funny, and I just didn't find it funny at all.
I downloaded this book quite a while ago and decided to give it a try. It stated that this was a mystery but I didn't find it to be much of one. The story was interesting and it was a very quick read. Actually read it in a few days because I didn't want to put it down once I got into it.
This story is about Daniel, who is a lawyer and his client Brian, who is a singer from a band in the 80's. That part was pretty fun since I grew up with 80's bands and music. The amount of drinking and drug use was unbelievable and I don't exactly know how Daniel kept his job with all of that activity but it is a work of fiction. There was quite a bit of exciting stuff happening throughout the book and it was good to see a guy who goes out of his mind over a breakup instead of always a crazy female )
I found this to be an enjoyable read but if you find excessive drinking and drugs offensive, then I'd pass this one by.
